Before the sleek cable-stayed design we see today, the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge opened in 1954 — and it looked very different.
🕰️ The original span served for decades until tragedy struck in 1980, when a freighter collided with the bridge during a storm, causing a section to collapse and taking 35 lives.
The current bridge — completed in 1987 — was designed not only to be beautiful, but safer, stronger, and storm-resistant, built to withstand hurricane-force winds and ship impact.
🌉 Today, it stands as one of Florida’s most iconic bridges, connecting St. Petersburg to Terra Ceia and drawing visitors from around the world for its views, piers, and engineering.
💬 Were you living in the area during the old Skyway era? Do you remember the transition? Share your stories, photos, or memories in the comments.
Let’s preserve the past while enjoying the view ahead.
